What if Everything You Thought You Knew About Weight Loss Was Wrong?

    • Articulate the basics of metabolism, including key hormones like insulin.

    • Learn how to identify your own metabolic risk type.

    • Understand some simple techniques to help you quantify your daily nutrient intake (net carbs, protein, etc.), while also uncovering common dietary myths.

    • Grasp an overall approach to key lifestyle changes that address your metabolic risk type.

  • Understanding your body's unique metabolism and how to make everyday dietary and exercise changes can be a vexing problem. Some of your friends may be thriving on low carb, keto or intermittent fasting, while others swear by a plant-based vegan diet. What's the culprit behind weight gain and chronic health issues? Is it carbs, is it calories, is it dietary fat, is it stress, etc.? Dr Sinha will be sharing insights from his clinical practice and corporate programs so you can identify your metabolic type and start prioritizing the right foods and exercise routine to improve your energy, health, and body composition.

  • Dr Ronesh Sinha runs a lifestyle clinic and virtual programs focused on metabolic health and insulin resistance. Digital Tools to Catalyst Interdisciplinary Approaches in Dentistry

    • Understand the fundamentals of using CBCT technology to assist in comprehensive case diagnosis.

    • Achieve more accurate case diagnoses; and

    • Achieve more predictable treatment outcomes in challenging cases situations using Lab CAD/CAM expertise.

  • The integration of CBCT with virtual planning in dentistry has been constantly and meticulously improved over the last few decades. Work protocols within a digital flow provide excellent results in endodontics, orthodontics, implantology, and perioesthetics.

Critical examples include complex paraendodontic surgeries close to noble structures which can now be performed with a high degree of safety and precision. Another example is metricifying the design of the peri-implant profile, digitally following the already described alveolar model, allowing the maintenance of the gingival architecture for immediate implant placements in aesthetic areas with the use of pre-surgical milled provisionals using these metrics biologically. Finally, developing the precision to guide oral and maxillofacial implants to support prostheses, even when anchorage takes place close to important anatomical structures.

In this lecture, Dr Machado will review present protocols and propose future solutions for one of the great remaining treatment challenges, connecting radiographic diagnoses to interdisciplinary case planning. This is essential for all stakeholders including restorative dentists, specialists and the ever-important laboratory team members with the ultimate beneficiaries being our patients.

Rodrigo S. Cunha, DDS, MSc, PhD; Tim Dumore, DMD

    • List numerous pulpal alterations that can occur during orthodontic treatment.

    • Describe appropriate management in cases requiring integrated endodontic and orthodontic treatment.

  • Orthodontic movement may cause a great number of tissue alterations in the dental pulp, which may not be entirely recognized. Depending on the duration, type and magnitude of the force, and the physiologic tissue tolerance, the pulp tissue may be affected in a reversible or irreversible manner. This presentation will discuss with clinical cases using scientific evidence regarding these alterations and how to prevent and properly diagnose these clinical scenarios to achieve better outcomes for our patients.

Healthy Faces: The Dance Between Growth, Form, and Function

Rebecca Bockow, DDS, MS;
Michael Gunson, DDS, MD

    • Understand that skeletal growth is impacted by the way we use soft tissue such as the lips, cheeks, and tongue.

    • Diagnose and treat the face and jaws as a harmonious system, rather than separate pieces and parts.

  • Historically in dentistry, we have identified problems in isolation and rendered treatment with a singular focus. We know that unhealthy growth causes the orofacial system to adapt and compensate in order to breathe, chew, swallow and speak. It is of primary importance, as healthcare providers of the face, to identify unhealthy growth and its resultant pathological patterns in order to re-establish our patient to functional, purposeful esthetic harmony. By diagnosing and treating the face as a system, clinicians address all the underlying causes of dysfunction which restore health and ensure stability.

Drs Bockow and Gunson will discuss the complications of early and untreated tongue ties, lack of upward tongue pressure during formative growth years, mouth breathing and many other issues related breathing, lip closure, swallow, speech and function.

Progress in dentistry is understanding and treating the whole dynamic facial system, not just isolated, easily observable, static problems.

  • Dr Rebecca Bockow completed her DDS training at the University of Washington Dental School in 2007. She practiced as a general dentist in Seattle for two years while simultaneously teaching at the UW Dental School. Dr Bockow completed a highly selective dual-specialty program combining orthodontics and periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a board-certified orthodontist and periodontist. While simultaneously enrolled in two residency programs, she also received a master’s in oral biology, focusing on intranasal ketorolac for postoperative implant pain management. Dr Bockow lectures nationally on periodontics, orthodontics, interdisciplinary orthodontics, airway, and skeletal growth and development. She contributes to multiple professional journals as an author and editor, and is resident faculty at Spear Education.

Dr Michael J. Gunson graduated from UCLA Dental School, Medical School and received his Specialty Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery also from UCLA. Dr Gunson's private practice in Santa Barbara, CA is limited to facial reconstructive surgery. His broad understanding of facial health has dramatically improved functional and esthetic outcomes in orthognathic surgery. He enjoys sharing this information through teaching, publications, and lectures. He is also an associate professor at Boston University School of Dentistry.

A Walkthrough of Contemporary Literature in Restorative Dentistry and Future Trends

Taiseer Sulaiman, DDS, PhD

    • Examine current research relevant to restorative dentistry, and a look into future trends and direction.

    • Evaluate clinically relevant literature recommendations and their implementation to everyday clinical procedures.

  • Restorative dentistry has made significant strides in recent decades. Beginning with a simple and direct treatment plan consisting of rather invasive treatment procedures and a few material choices to complete treatment, a complex treatment plan with numerous restorative options emphasizing the preservation of tooth structure and an endless supply of materials has evolved. Clinical evidence is becoming increasingly limited. Unless completed correctly, in vitro investigations yield minimal clinical relevance. It is vitally important to stay current with the latest advancements in diagnostic methods, efficient therapeutic planning, conservative restorative dental techniques, and materials.

He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters. He is a member of many academies including the Academy of Operative Dentistry (where he serves as councilor to the academy), the Society of Color and Appearance in Dentistry, IADR/AADR, and the American Dental Association. He has presented on numerous national and international stages and serves as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals.

Applications of 3D Printing and the Digital Workflow to the Modern Surgical Practice: From Single Implants to Full-Arch Reconstruction to even Teeth in Leg Bones!

    • Describe Point of Care printing and how it works.

    • Identify how digital office-based implant workflows transfer to the operating room in trauma, corrective jaw surgery and post ablative defects.

  • Point-of-care (POC) printing is becoming common practice in many dental offices and has similarly seen an expanded use in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Traditionally, patients that have sustained major maxillofacial trauma and tumors have resultant defects that required delayed implant placement after extensive bone grafting.

With advances in reconstructive surgery and technological advances with point-of-care 3D printing, we are now able to reconstruct patients’ missing jaws with bone, teeth and implants in one surgery. Building on fully digital office-based fundamentals of all of x and zygomatic implants, we are now able to add teeth to bones taken from the leg and even shoulder blades to give smiles to those who deserve it the most. These point-of-care digital scanning, planning and printing protocols can also be used to expedite trauma reconstruction and orthognathic surgery.

  • Following completion of residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California San Francisco Dr Baber Khatib completed fellowships in Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Trauma as well as Head and Neck Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. During this training, he pursued clinical research focusing on innovative surgical techniques, improving intraoperative efficiency, and reducing the economic burden of reconstructive procedures in head and neck cancer and trauma patient.

His clinical interest lies in the use of intraoperative computed tomography, point-of-care three-dimensional printing and surface scanning to manipulate patient-specific data to fabricate custom hardware, medical models, and surgical guides. He has applied these technologies to his office-based practice as well as in craniomaxillofacial trauma and post-ablative head and neck reconstruction.

Since joining his surgical practice at Head and Neck Surgical Associates/Oregon Health Sciences University he has established and is the director of the “Portland 3D printing lab”. This lab served as the foundation for the first “Jaw in a Day” procedure in a cancer patient on the West Coast.

Dr Khatib thoroughly enjoys teaching and sharing his experience with point-of-care 3D printing to all facets of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery ranging from office-based procedures such as full arch reconstruction to complex head and neck microvascular reconstruction.

Modern (Surgical & Prosthetic) Reconstruction: A New Approach

    • Understand the traditional prosthetic approaches to full-mouth reconstruction.

    • Appreciate the evolution of prosthetic (and surgical) workflows within the modern digital era.

    • Identify the different applications of a modern workflow for both surgical and prosthetic applications in full-mouth reconstructions.

  • Full mouth reconstruction in prosthodontics is an ever-evolving niche of dentistry. With modern technologies rapidly evolving at an almost overwhelming pace, the need for an understanding of the fundamentals becomes more valuable than ever before. In this lecture, Dr. Sinada will discuss what a modern prosthodontic reconstruction looks like in today’s prosthodontic practice; simultaneously highlighting prosthetic and surgical fundamentals that are critical for success. As the technology and clinical innovations in full mouth reconstructions advance, this treatment modality becomes more ubiquitous among dental practices. Consequently, more clinicians are performing these advanced procedures with tools that allow them to become more efficient in doing so. Therefore, it becomes even more pertinent in this day and age to (1) focus on the treatment planning of such cases, and (2) evolve the types of treatments that these patients need in this realm.

Whether these patients are currently treated by yourself (or they are referred elsewhere), understanding the treatment modalities discussed from a bird’s eye view is pertinent to optimizing patient care. This will therefore be a lecture pertinent to clinicians in all phases of their professional careers.
