Wines of Santa Barbara County’s Sta. Rita Hills
A letter from SSC director Eric Rindler

This small appellation, located in the western portion of the Santa Ynez Valley, has been quietly producing exceptional and sought-after wines for over three decades. You likely know of the area from the movie “Sideways.”

We all enjoy discovering great luxuries in life ahead of the pop culture curve. This is the case with Santa Barbara County Wine, a fairly undiscovered, yet world class region; set to be a household name. Relevant and influential wine critics such as the Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate and Vinous Media are very bullish on the region. Santa Barbara is home to several 100-point winemakers, producing wines that you may recognize; Sea Smoke, Brewer-Clifton, Tensley, Melville, Foxen and of course Fess Parker.

One of the true rising stars in the area is Frequency Wines, owned and operated by winemaker Zac Wasserman. His passion for winemaking and his dedication to using only the finest grapes have made Frequency Wines a standout among the Sta. Rita Hills producers. Zac’s DiPalermo label produces truly exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His Frequency Wines label focuses on high value Rhone varietals (think Syrah & GSM) – fantastic quality priced as affordable daily drinkers. My understanding is that many of the other winemakers in the region are drinking Zac’s wines! I reached out to Zac and he is going to be offering a pre-Symposium promo for SSC members and is willing to arrange a special Frequency tasting event while we are in Santa Barbara.

A couple other of our favorites in the region are Stolpman (their sangiovese is one of Missy’s favorites), Piedrasassi, as well as Dragonette.

To get the full Santa Barbara wine experience you do not need to visit the vineyards. There are many tasting rooms conveniently located in and around Downtown Santa Barbara (including Frequency’s tasting room). If you do choose to visit a vineyard you might consider visiting Andrew Murray, Foxen, or Pence. If you are looking for a wine ½ day trip, I would suggest visiting Los Olivos. Los Olivos is a charming town 45 minutes away, full of tasting rooms, restaurants and shops.

I hope you will love Santa Barbara as much as we do. Santa Barbara is a wonderful place and the great wine is the cherry on top!

Cheers to the magic of the Sta. Rita Hills!
Sincerely, Eric Rindler
