Know What You’re Treating: Salivary Diagnostics for Precision Oral-Systemic Care Better diagnostics. Better treatments. Better results
Lecture up to 1 hour
Periodontics | AGD Subject Code 490
A clinical examination reveals what disease has already done—but it may not identify the microbial, viral, and inflammatory factors driving it. In this interactive, case-based course, Dr Katie Lee demonstrates how salivary diagnostics can add a powerful layer of precision to periodontal and oral-systemic care. Participants will compare PCR, next-generation sequencing, and inflammatory biomarker testing; identify appropriate candidates; and learn proper collection and interpretation. Using real patient reports and collaborative case exercises, attendees will integrate salivary findings with medical history, radiographs, periodontal findings, and systemic risk to develop individualized treatment and monitoring protocols. The course concludes with practical language and workflows that clinicians can implement immediately to improve patient understanding, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clinical outcomes.
Upon completion of this workshop, attendees should be able to:
- Explain how oral microbial dysbiosis, inflammation, and viral activity may influence oral-systemic health and treatment response.
- Develop individualized, evidence-informed treatment and monitoring protocols by combining salivary findings with periodontal examination, imaging, medical history, and systemic risk factors.

Dr Katie Lee is an internationally recognized clinician, author, and speaker whose work centers on oral microbiome science and oral-systemic health. She has incorporated saliva testing into clinical care since 2012 and is known for making complex microbial data clinically relevant – helping dental teams connect oral pathogens and inflammation with systemic health, then translate those findings into precise, actionable care. Dr Lee has spoken globally on the mouth-body connection and is a sought-after educator for clinicians ready to move beyond symptom management. Dr Lee is the Founder and CEO of Collective Health Society, the first integrated biological dental and functional wellness clinic focused on root-cause diagnostics and precision therapies to improve patients’ health. The model brings advanced oral microbiome testing, biological dentistry, functional wellness, airway and sleep care, and collaborative diagnostics together under one roof – positioning the mouth as a vital gateway to total health. She serves as a Clinical Advisor for Wellnesse, Daily Dental Cares, and Oris Dx, advising organizations committed to improving prevention, diagnostics, patient education, and clinical outcomes. Secondarily, she is Vice President of Education for North American Dental Group, where she leads clinical, evidence-based education that supports consistent, high-quality care. Her expertise is grounded in both science and lived experience. After a serious ATV accident as a teenager left her with extensive facial and dental trauma, Dr Lee experienced firsthand how oral health can shape systemic health and quality of life. She graduated second in her class from the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry and later served in multi-practice clinical leadership, giving her a rare perspective that spans individual patient care, clinician development, and enterprise-scale implementation.
